Proposal Title: Deep HI: nature of Lyman alpha forest, di use galaxy halos, evolution of the
Universe's HI content to z=0.23
ABSTRACT:
Arecibo is the only radio telescope that is likely to detect emission from the ionizied Lyman alpha forest clouds
that must be present in the nearby universe. Very deep integrations on both selected and pseudo-randomly chosen
sight lines will simultaneously seek local examples of Ly-forest clouds, emission from galaxies associated with
clouds, emission from di use galaxy halos, and measurement of the HI content of "HI-selected galaxies" to z=0.23.
