CURRENT RESEARCH : I. Evolution of Fundamental Constants : Collab orators: Nissim Kanekar, Jayaram Chengalur (GMRT, India) We have b een accumulating deep-integration sp ectra of the L-band OH satellite lines of the associated-absorb er in PKS 1413+135 at a redshift of z = 0.247. The conjugate nature of these lines implies that the resulting high-precision redshift measurements can b e used to prob e changes in 1

some of the fundamental physical constants. In late 2008, it was found that the Arecib o data taken in 2006 had an erroneous velocity scale due to incorrect on-line Doppler tracking for the particular combination of sp ectrometer and observing procedure used at that time. By early 2009, this had b een corrected, and a further 40 hours of observations taken in May-June 2009 showed excellent agreement b etween the measured velocity values of the two satellite lines and WSRT measurements of the same quantities. The analysis of these 2009 Arecib o data imply, [G/G] = 1.03 ± 0.51 â 10-5 , 1.85 where G gp 2 /µ , a combination of the fine structure constant , the electron-proton mass ratio µ me /mp and the proton gyromagnetic ratio gp . This is an improvement on the value of [G/G] = 1.9 ± 1.1 â 10-5 derived from the earlier WSRT data. A weighted average of the WSRT and AO results gives [G/G] = 1.18 ± 0.46 â 10-5 , yielding 2.6 evidence for a change in , µ or gp from the ep och at which we see PKS 1413+135, i.e. over a look-back time of 2.9 Gyr. A pap er has b een submitted to ApJ for the publication of this result. Efforts are now underway to obtain further integration at Arecib o and improve the statistical significance of this result. I I. High Resolution Mapping of Methanimine in Arp220 : Collab orators: Chris Salter, Rob ert Minchin, Danna Qassim (NAU, REU-2009) During the summer of 2009, we mentored an REU student, Danna Qassim of Northern Arizona University, and worked on a pro ject of milliarcsecond MERLIN mapping of Methanimine in Arp220. The data cub e produced surprising evidence for a compact region of methanimine emission in the eastern nucleus of this double-nuclear starburst galaxy, in which the western comp onent has b een considered to harb or an AGN. This work was presented at the AAS meeting in January 2010. I I I. Cm-wavlength Molecular Lines in Galactic and Extragalactic Environments : I am also involved in a numb er of observing pro jects searching for cm-wavelength molecular lines in Arp220-like ULIRGs, and galactic star forming regions. Recently, these searches have b een extended to the 700 800 MHz band, utilizing the newly installed UHF receiver at Arecib o.

SOFTWARE and DATA REDUCTION EXPERIENCE : Since 1983, I have b een using Fortran as my basic programming language. I have also b een using the IDL package for the last eight years, often developing codes within that environment. I have some familiarity with C and Unix Scripts. I have worked with PDP, Alliant, Vax/VMS, Unix, Linux, Solaris and Mac OSX op erating systems. I am also familiar with a variety of word processing and desk-top publishing software (b oth Windows and Apple-Macintosh based). I am conversant with html-based web-page developments. For Astronomical data reductions, I have used various standard Single dish and Synthesis Telescop es' data reduction packages. In addition, in the recent past, I have b een using IDL extensively.

OBSERVER SUPPORT : VLBI related work: The ma jor part of my observer supp ort work over the years have b een in the area of Arecib o's participation in Very Long Baseline Interferometry. Aided by Chris Salter, Emmanuel Momjian (while he was a working for NAIC/AO) constantly, and Arun Venkatraman, and the Electronics Department whenever needed, I have worked with the S2, VLBA4 and Mark5C and eVLBI systems making them available for the users. Since most VLBI data are taken in absentee mode, Chris Salter, (Emmanuel Momjian) and I have also b een involved in every asp ect of all VLBI observations, pre- and p ost-observation calibration and communicating with the correlator and the P.Is. At each stage, we have also b een the staff scientists evaluating the needs of the users and planning successive upgrades. We are exp ecting two ma jor developments in this area within 2010. The first is the acquisition of the digital backend (RDBE) from NRAO, and implementing its use with a Mrak5C recorder to enhance the Arecib o VLBI capabilities by a factor of four. The second is the acquisition of an auxiliary antenna (12-meter diameter) to b e used together with the 305-m dish to provide much improved phase-referencing VLBI observations. Visiting (non-VLBI) Observer Supp ort: I have help ed many general sp ectroscopic observers as their "Friend of the Telescop e". This has often involved assisting/coaching visiting observers as to how to use the telescop e in the b est p ossible way for the particular pro ject, and later to guide them through their data reduction and calibration. If and when needed, I have also develop ed IDL-based codes for their sp ecific needs.

EXPECTATIONS FOR FUTURE WORK : For the VLBI users of the Arecib o Observatory, I exp ect to facilitate up to 4-Gbps data recording. This will involve commissioning the newly procured RDBE and Mark5C systems. I also exp ect to work towards integrating the 12-m dish with regular VLBI observations. This will help me participate in commissioning the "small dish", and developing the techniques for phase-referencing VLBI employing the 12-m antenna for observations using the 305-m dish in US and Global VLBI arrays. Scientifically, I exp ect to continue working with the molecular line survey of Galactic star forming regions which is exp ected to b egin soon. One new area in which I would focus b eginning this summer is a "Search for Variable Radio Sources in GALFACTS". GALFACTS is a full-Stokes continuum "all sky" (covering the declination range of 0.8 to +37.8 deg) mapping program at 1.4 GHz currently on-going at the Arecib o Observatory. It is a collab orative program involving many scientists from various countries, with diverse in-depth scientific ob jectives led by different groups. (See http://www.ucalgary.ca/ras/GALFACTS for more details). When complete, GALFACTS will have covered a sky area of ab out 4.0 sr. and is exp ected to detect ab out 230,000 discrete extragalactic sources with flux densities greater than 10 mJy/b eam. With the planned observing strategy of GALFACTS, each p oint in the sky is visited twice, with the interval b etween visits spanning 1 to 28 days. Thus, given the large numb er involved, extremely interesting statistics on short-term variability prop erties of discreet radio sources can b e obtained. In addition, comparison with the accurate flux densities of NVSS (NRAO VLA Sky Survey) will provide variability information on a time scale of 10 yr. The sky has never b efore b een searched systematically for variations to this depth, and over such a large area. Beginning in the next few months, I exp ect to work towards algorithm development first, then translate that in to a working program and eventually run the data through. So far ab out 1/4th of the survey has taken place, 4

and a variability study of even that subset would provide statistically significant results.
