WISP Observations of the Pleiades in the Ultraviolet

WISP Observations of the Pleiades in the Ultraviolet

Full 5 x 7 degree field, oriented North-up, East-left

Close-up of central cluster

These partially reduced images of the Pleiades were taken by WISP using its longer-wavelength (2180 Å) UV filter. Point-spread functions (PSFs) of the brightest stars have been removed to reveal much of the inner reflection nebula, both in a centralized diffuse glow and in the nebulosity south of Merope, the bottom star in the Pleiades ``bowl''.

The PSF removal process was improved since these images were produced. Better ultraviolet images can be found here.
