Cones vs. Patches : Understanding the Geometry of Radio Pulsar Emission Regions

Yashwant Gupta, TIFR Pune University

Abstract:
One important clue to unravelling the outstanding puzzle of pulsar emission physics can come from a detailed localization of the regions in the pulsar magnetosphere which emit the radio radiation. Different tools brought to bear upon the problem of pulsar emission geometry will be discussed. New results using some of the old techniques (like scintillation studies), as well as new techniques and results using single pulse studies and simultaneous dual frequency observations will be described. Many of our new results favour a conal geometry for the arrangement of emission regions and allow accurate estimates of the emission heights and polar cap locations for the emission cones to be obtained. These results indicate that pulsar emission cones may be located at around half-way out the edge of the polar cap and at altitudes of a few hundred to a thousand kilometers above the neutron star surface.
