Fourth Announcement

This fourth announcement lets you know about, 1) the Hands-On Project to which you have been assigned for the Summer School, 2) the pick-up schedule and arrangements for San Juan airport on Saturday, July 11th, 3) a few words on the scheduling of the Telescope Platform Tours, and 4) the School Registration.

Hands-On Project Teams

Allocation of each participant to a Hands-On Project team can be seen on the web page, http://www.naic.edu/~astro/sdss5/hopteams.shtml.

We were able to fit 37 of the 53 participants into their first choices, and 11 into their second choice. Nobody was allocated to lower than their third choice! We trust that you will all enjoy the experience.

Pick-up Schedule and Arrangements for San Juan Airport on Saturday

The person coordinating the pick-ups from San Juan airport on Saturday, July 11th is Ms. Tasha Trilla of Gray Line Coach Puerto Rico. Her cell phone number is 787-407-0698.

The meeting place for joining a shuttle trip to Arecibo (Observatory and hotels) will be the U.S. Post Office at San Juan airport. This is located near the American Airlines baggage hall exit. If you ask any airport staff, they will direct you there (there is only one Post Office.) Ms. Trilla will be at the Post Office, and will have a sign identifying the School. The five shuttle journeys will leave on the schedule given below.

Bus leaves at:

July 11, 12:30 pm (30 min after noon)
July 11, 03:00 pm
July 11, 06:00 pm
July 11, 10:00 pm
July 12, 00:30 am (half past midnight)

The vehicles will be 25-seaters.

It will be helpful if those who plan to arrive in San Juan before July 11th, but who will come to the airport to pick up a shuttle ride that day, would e-mail us as to which of the five trips they intend to join. Ms. Trilla will be given a list of all the arrival times at the airport that we know of, and her job will be made much simpler if she knows on which shuttle each of you intend to travel to Arecibo.

If there are any complications on the day, and you cannot contact the cell phone of Ms. Trilla, you can call the Arecibo telescope operator at 1-787-878-2612 Ext 211 who will pass on a message to Observatory staff. Please give the operator your name and a phone number with the message so that we can get back to you.

If on arrival at the airport you wish to eat, please find and check-in with Ms. Trilla at the Post Office first, and see if there is time to visit an airport concession before the next trip leaves for Arecibo. Be warned that the Observatory cafeteria closes at 6 p.m. on Saturday, while food may be difficult to find late at night near the hotels. The journey from the airport will take 1.5 - 2 hours.

The timetable for drop-off trips to San Juan airport on Saturday, July 18th, will be finalized during the School, and communicated to you there.

Tours to the 305-m Telescope Platform

Tours to the telescope platform and Gregorian dome are planned for;

Saturday, July 11th between 12 noon and 4 p.m.
Sunday, July 12th between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Wednesday, July 15th between 8.30 a.m. and 12 noon
Thursday, July 16th between 8.30 a.m. and 12 noon

Each of these trips is subject to dry weather. The Saturday trip is for early arrivals staying at the Observatory (or NRAO staff). After 2 p.m. on Saturday, only non-digital cameras with mechanical shutters (e.g. disposable cameras) can be used during the trips as scientific observations will be taking place after that time. Remember, "closed shoes with flat heels" are obligatory for joining a telescope platform tour.

We will ask you about your trip preference when you are at the Observatory. However, if possible, could those wishing to join the Saturday trip please let us know (via e-mail to csalter@naic.edu) before that date.

School Registration

Registration for the School will take place in the Observatory Learing Center on Sunday, July 12th, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. For those staying at the Hotels Rosa del Mar or El Buen Cafe, the shuttle trip to the Observatory that morning will pick up from the hotels at 9 a.m. (Other days, it will pick up at 7 a.m.).
