CIMA Software Components

The currently available software components of CIMA

CIMA is more than just the observing tool - in fact, the observing tool is just a part of a bigger package called the CIMA software package. This package consists mostly of Tcl/Tk code and the various programs are launched from /home/cima/bin. There is also a another package called the CIMA WAPP software which contains the WAPP software, the special Tcl/Tk interpreter used by CIMA and support libraries.

The CIMA software

The following is a list of the currently installed software components of CIMA:

cima: starts a CIMA observing session (either in on-line or in off-line mode)
telescopewin: starts a display showing all the telescope parameters
catalogwin: starts a grahic display of the telescope with the sources from the current catalog included
iflowin: starts a display showing the IF/LO parameters
powerwin: starts a display showing the power levels and attenuator settings
rxview: starts a graphic display showing the IF/LO set-up
lastcimalog: starts a display showing the last output to the current CIMA observing log
cimalogview: starts a display that can be used to view and search in CIMA observing log files (under development but a number of features work)
alfabeamwin: shows the current ALFA beam positions on the sky (numerical values displayed are approximative)
alfadatawin: launches the data quick-look display (can ONLY be run on 'dataview')
alfalogwin: launches the ALFA engineering data log display facility
alfamonwin: launches the ALFA engineering monitor
alfamotorwin: shows and controls the ALFA rotation
alfaobswin: displays the WAPP power levels for the ALFA beams
alfastatwin: displays a summary of the ALFA engineering monitor (alfamonwin)





All CIMA software components recognize the following general options
that are part of the CIMA version selection system:


no option will launch the default version (or the
'normal' version if no default is set)
'--v version-name' will launch the version with the
specified name (version names can be abbreviated as long as they are unique)
'--a address' will launch the version located at
the specified address (the address has to be pointing to the top directory
of a CIMA software area, for example /home/cima/Software/Normal
for the 'normal' version of CIMA)
'--V' will give you a text-based menu to choose
from
'--X' will give you an X-windows menu to choose
from
'--D' will use the version that has been selected as the
default version with select_cima - if no default version has
been selected, it will give you an X-windows menu to choose
from (this option is used for menus like the one on 'dataview')
'--h' or '--H' will produce a list of all
general options


The usage of '--' instead of just '-' for
the selection options is to separate those general options (which
all CIMA programs understand) from program specific options.

The select_cima script can be used to set up a default
version. It accepts all the options listed above except the
--D option. If no option is given, it will provide you
with a text-based menu. select_cima also recognize a
special option:


'--n' or '--N' which will cancel any default
setting




 The CIMA WAPP software 

The CIMA WAPP package is a software package of compiled C-code that
contains the WAPP software, the special Tcl/Tk-interpreter used by
CIMA and common support libraries. Only one version of the CIMA WAPP
package is installed, so there is no possibility to select between
different versions like for the CIMA software. Most of the CIMA WAPP
software is used internally by the WAPPs and the CIMA system, but
there are a few programs that can be of use for the observer. They are
also located in /home/cima/bin. Several of these programs can
be run either on Linux or on Solaris computers.


The following is a list of the publically available software components
of CIMA WAPP package:


aostatus:
launches the full screen observing status display
asciidump: dumps the ASCII-header of a WAPP pulsar file
horizon: calculates rise, set and slew times
merge_fits: merges two CIMAFITS-files into one
shrink_fits: shrinks a CIMAFITS-file by removing unused space
wapp_split: splits a dual board WAPP pulsar file into two
files




 The /home/cima/bin directory 

Anyone who looks at the /home/cima/bin directory will
notice that none of the above-mentioned programs actually reside in
this directory (and the /home/cima/bin directory doesn't
exist either --- it is a symbolic link to another directory in the
/home/cima structure). Instead all these programs are
symbolic links pointing either to a script called
'cima_selector' (for CIMA software) or to a script called
'cima_launcher' (for CIMA WAPP software). The
'cima_selector' script is used for CIMA software and is
the one that handles the version selection. The
'cima_launcher' is used for the CIMA WAPP software and
checks which compiled version is needed depending on which computer
architecture the program is going to run on.
