The fundamental properties of early-type galaxies
in the Coma Cluster

Early-type galaxies in clusters exhibit remarkably tight
correlations between their global properties, e.g. the colour-
magnitude relation, the Mg2 - relation and the Fundamental
Plane. These relationships provide the basic constraints that
all theories of galaxy formation and evolution must satisfy. We
have obtained a set of high quality velocity dispersion and line
strength data for a complete and homogeneous sample of 120
Coma cluster early-type galaxies brighter than b=17.5 within the
central 1 degree of the cluster. This sample is used to address
several key issues including: (1) the precise tilt and intrinsic
scatter of the Fundamental Plane and (2) the e ect of age and
metallicity variations on the global correlations. In addition,
these data provide a baseline for evolutionary studies of distant
clusters.
