ISSI Call for Proposals 2015 for Johannes Geiss Fellowship
The International Space Science Institute is an Institute of Advanced Studies located in Switzerland. Its main task is to contribute to the achievement of a deeper understanding of the results of space research missions, adding value through multi-disciplinary research in an atmosphere of international cooperation 1. Purpose ISSI has approved the introduction of the Johannes Geiss Fellowships (JGF). This new programme will help ISSI to fulfil its mandate (for information about ISSI please refer to our homepage at www.issibern.ch). In 1994, Pro ISSI issued a Brochure defining the mandate of the soon to-be-created International Space Science Institute: "It is proposed to create an Institute in Switzerland called ISSI at which scientists from many countries can work together to achieve a deeper understanding of the results from space missions, adding value to those results through multidisciplinary research in an atmosphere of international cooperation". It has been agreed that ISSI focuses the JGF to help to achieve the bold-faced goals. ISSI has a visitor programme, funds post-doctoral fellows, and encourages the participation of young scientists in the International Teams. The JGF are not intended to duplicate these existing programmes, but rather to target visiting scientists of special stature who will enhance the reputation of ISSI and will be attracted to ISSI by the honour of receiving a JGF and the opportunity that it offers. The JGF is established to attract to ISSI - for limited duration visits - international scientists of stature, who can make demonstrable contributions to the ISSI mission and increase ISSI's stature by their presence and by doing so will honour Johannes Geiss for his founding of ISSI and his contributions to ISSI, and for his many contributions to a broad range of space science disciplines. JGF would offer a stipend, paying travel expenses and living expenses for a stay at ISSI of 1-6 months, possibly in several separate intervals, to coincide with time availability on university academic calendars. In return for the stipend, the JGF recipient would be expected to participate actively in the work of ISSI, be available to collaborate with academic and research institutes in Switzerland and neighbouring countries, and possibly give public lectures. This can be done in close collaboration with the Pro ISSI Association. ISSI might also consider involving its branch in China, ISSI-Beijing, in these activities. The JGF can also provide additional funding and support to scientists in sabbatical period.
