Institute of Applied Astronomy Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Institute of Applied Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Institute of Applied Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAA RAS) is one of the world's largest astronomical institutions. The IAA RAS carries out research in the fields of new methods of astronometry and geodynamics, ephemeris astronomy, classical and relativistic celestial mechanics, radioastronomy and radiointerferomtry, space geodesy, and fundamental positioning and timing services.

In addition to the wide range of research carried out, the IAA RAS publishes Russian and international yearbooks and almanacs, containing the ephemerides of the Sun, Moon, large and small planets, and stars. These are calculated with the highest possible degree of precision in accordance with standards set by the International Astronomical Union. The Institute also publishes data on various astronomical phenomena - solar and lunar eclipses, rising and setting times of the sun, planetary configurations and more. Among other published materials are weekly newsletters focused on the ERP (Earth rotation parameters). The newsletters include the results of processing of radiointerferometric, laser and satellite observations, and their comparison wit data collected by the International Earth Rotation Service.

The IAA RAS also develops software packages for high-precision processing of various types of astronomical observations - optical, radioastronomical, radiointerferometric, radar, laser, doppler and more.

One of the main projects of the IAA RAS is the Quasar VLBI network, comprised of three observatories and a collation center. Using the Quasar netwoek the IAA RAS carries out frequent radioninterferometric and radiastronomical observations. More information regarding the scientific activities of the IAA RAS can be found in the corresponding menu tab above.
