General information:
The Euro-Asian Astronomical Society was created in April 1990.
The Society performs its activities mainly in New Independent
States (NIS) on the territory of the Former Soviet Union and
surrounding countries. The main
goals of the society are to maintain the development of astronomy and
to reinforce scientific contacts between astronomers of the former
Soviet Union and their colleagues all over the world. Official
languges of EAAS - Russian and English.
EAAS is an international society de facto as well as de jure.
It is officially registered (legalized) in Russia as an
international society (official license from the Ministry
of Low of Russian Federation).
EAAS has a total of about 750 members from 31 countries:

EAAS has science teaching programs and supports
young professional and amateur astronomers.
The Society and its branches, partially in cooperation with other
institutions, organize several major international scientific
meetings each year (6 meetings during 1996).
EAAS and its branch have 7 periodic publications: 3 information
bulletin (including electronic newsletters), two scientific journals
(including the refereeing English-language journal "Astronomical and
Astrophysical Transactions"), two popular magazines.
The Society has developed a number of programs aimed to support
astronomy and astronomers of the countries-former Soviet Republics
and surrounding states:
- Invitations to scientific meetings held or supported by EAAS for
participants mainly from NIS (including Russia) and Central Europe, with
at least partial travel and living support.
- Library program: free or very cheap subscription to Russian-language
astronomical and space research journals and magazines for astronomical
institutions of NIS and a part of Central Europe countries (except Russia),
as well as to Astronomical and Astrophysical Transactions (in English).
- EAAS awards are open for astronomers from all countries (in fact,
mainly from Former Soviet Union). Among the winners of 1995 year award for
young scientists (up to 40) 1 Russian, 1 Ukrainian, and 2 Armenian
astronomers were counted. Medals of Honour for scientific school creation
were awarded in 1996 to Academician E.K.Kharadze (Georgia) and Prof. S.Ya.
Braude (Ukraine). One of the two main EAAS 1996 awards for scientific
research was won by Dr. Rachkovskij from Ukraine, another, by a group of
Russian scientists. Two of the three winners of 1996 awards for young
scientists are from Ukraine (Odessa and Kiev observatories respectively).
The 1996 Honour Diploma for popularization of astronomical knowledge was
awarded to Prof. Kalinenkov from Ukraine (Nikolaev).

plenary and section
scientific program in all the areas of modern astronomy and astrophysics
is planned, as well as a special session on the occasion of 40 anniversary
of the beginning of the Space Era, a workshop on archaeoastronomy, etc.
- "Variable Stars" - Scientific-Memorial conference to
Prof.Tsesevich,
on the occasion of his 90th birthday, Odessa, September 1-5, 1997.
The main topic: variable objects in astrophysics. The conference continues
the series of traditional Odessa every-four-years conferences on variable
stars.
- Researches on Solar Cycles (May 1997, 3rd decade,
St.Petersburg). Main topics: statistic properties of Solar cycles;
dynamo-mechanism; prognosis of 23rd cycle.
- "Stars, Planetaria, People" - on the occasion of 40th anniversary of
the beginning of the Cosmic Era, Kaluga (Russia), September 15-16, 1997.
The main topic: forms and methods of modern planetaria work on
promoting the knowledge about present day cosmonautics, forming the
global thinking and interest to space research.
