Trapping of Particles by a Magnetic Field Line

In the Earth's magnetosphere, fast electrons and ions ("charged particles") tend to spiral around magnetic field lines, while bouncing back and forth, unable to penetrate the stronger magnetism near the Earth.

Where it is strong enough, the magnetic field traps them.

Where it isn't, field lines still guide the particles, but the particles bend them to keep up their own flow.
