Julin David Alvarado Gmez

ASTROPHYSICIST

Welcome!

I am a PhD Student/Researcher at the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics, with a position at the European Southern Observatory (ESO). My research is mainly focused on magnetic fields and their influence over activity, winds and the environment around the Sun and other late-type stars. For this I use space and ground-based observations, in combination with detailed plasma and magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) numerical simulations.

I studied physics (B.Sc.) and astrophysics (M.Sc.) at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and the Observatorio Astronmico Nacional, where I took active part in the consolidation of the Group of Solar Astrophysics (GoSA). You can find more details about my work in the next pages.

Next

Research: Heliophysics

The Sun is our natural astrophysical laboratory. By studying it in detail, we have gained most of our understanding of the various plasma processes in the Universe. In particular, it provides an unprecedent view of the interactions and phenomena associated with astrophysical magnetic fields. The complexity of such phenomena can only be matched by their beauty.

Topics of interest:

Magnetic and activity cycles, solar corona, transient events (flares/CMEs), solar wind and space weather.

Expertise:

EUV, SXR, HXR, Magnetic-Doppler data | 3D MHD numerical simulations.

Research: Stellar Astrophysics

The large number of stars in the night sky offer endless possibilities in astrophysics. In recent years, advanced instrumentation and observational techniques have expanded our knowledge on stellar magnetism dramatically. This, combined with the ever-growing field of exoplanets, provides new synergies between solar and stellar systems science.

Topics of interest:

Solar-Stellar connection, coronae and winds, exo-space weather.

Expertise:

Spectro-polarimetry with NARVAL, ESPaDOnS and HARPS | 3D MHD numerical simulations.

External Interests

The balance between body and mind is fundamental. While Astrophysics puts my mind to the test, I have found in the discipline of Calisthenics a natural path for developing body strength, agility and resistance. You can check some of my progress below.

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training.
It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable
