On 18 April 2002 the Russian Aviation and Space Agency, S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia and European Space Agency (ESA), Belgian Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs (OSTC) concluded a contract to fly Belgian astronaut Frank de Winne, member of European astronauts team as Soyuz TMA-1 flight engineer as the visiting crew VC-4 member to the International Space Station (ISS) and perform the Odessia Project scientific program.
The Odissea project foresees the implementation of 17 expeirments in the following areas:

  • Biotechnology
- 6 SE;
  • Life Science
- 5 SE;
  • Physical Science
- 4 SE;
  • Geophysics
- 1 SE;
  • Educational program
- 1 SE.

ODISSEA Project Experiments

Biotechnology
VITAMIN D Investigation of effect of microgravity on the mechanism of action of Vitamin D in osteoblasts.
RHOSIGNAL Effect of microgravity on GTPases of the Rhosig family (Rho GTPases) in human fibroblasts.
RAMIROS Effect of space radiation and microgravity on mammalian oxidative stress.
MESSAGE Study of bacterial gene expression (evolution) in space flight.
GCF-B Protein crystallization.
PROMISS Protein Crystal Growth Monitoring by Digital Holographic Microscope.

Life Science
CARDIOCOG Study of changes of human cardiovascular system in zero gravity.
NEUROCOG Study of brain potential with concentrated attention in virtual 3D space in zero gravity.
SYMPATHO Study of sympathoadrenal activity in microgravity conditions.
VIRUS Monitoring Latent Virus Reactivation and Shedding in Crewmembers.
SLEEP Recording of activity during sleep and after awakening and light exposure in space flight.

Physical Science
DCCO Measurement of diffusion coefficients in raw oil.
ZEOGRID Investigation of structure and morphology of nanoscopic zeolite slabs under microgravity conditions.
NANOSLAB Study of the aggregation mechanism and kinetics of ZSM-5 and Silicalite-1 nanoslabs into ZSM-5 / Silicalite-1 hybrid phases under micro-gravity conditions.
COSMIC Combustion synthesis in microgravity conditions.

Geophysical Investigations
LSO-B Observation of lightning and sprites.

Educational program
EDUCATION Video filming of demonstration of simple physical phenomena (VIDEO). Radio amateur communication (ARISS).

Public relations and Symbolic activities are planned to be performed within the frame of Odissea Project.

Thirteen Odissea Project experiments will be performed in the Russian Segment of the ISS. Four experiments PROMISS, DCCO, NANOSLAB, COSMIC will be performed in MSG in the US Segment of the ISS.
Three experiments VITAMIN D, RHOSIGNAL, RAMIROS will be performed on hardware Aquarius-B.
Due to the fact that the station orbital attitude will not be available during VC-4 mission experiment LSO-B will be conducted by ISS-5 crew till the beginning of VC-4.
The Odissea project experiments will use both the hardware uploaded within this project, and the hardware already available on board the ISS RS. The flight hardware, as well as Russian scientific hardware and hardware left after completion of the Andromede and Marko Polo missions will be used.

For implementation of the ODISSEA Project the following resources are required:

CARGO FLOW

Ascent to the ISS RS

  • in Progress M1-9 logistics vehicle
  • in Soyouz TMA-1 transport spacecraft

79.25 kg
23.93 kg

Descent of materials with SE results

  • in Soyouz TM-34 descent capsule
  • in Space Shuttle, flight ULF1

20.10 kg
46.75 kg

POWER CONSUMPTION
Permanent
40 W
Maximum per session
up to 100 W

CREW TIME
VC-4 Flight engineer-1 F. De Winne
39 h 15 min
VC-4 Commander S. Zaletin
25 h 55 min
ISS-5 Commander V. Korzun
0 h 00 min
ISS-5 Flight Engineer-2 S. Treschev
4 h 40 min

The entire experimental program for the most part is performed by the VC-4 flight engineer, ESA astronaut of Belgian nationality. However, life science experiments (CARDIOCOG, NEUROCOG, SYMPATHO, VIRUS, SLEEP) are performed by two VC-4 crewmembers (commander and flight engineer, ESA astronaut of Belgian nationality). These experiments also foresee the performance of pre- and post-flight medical measurements.
The VC-4 Commander will perform Aquarius-B operations for three experiments VITAMIN D, RHOSIGNAL, RAMIROS.
The Expedition ISS-5 crewmembers shall be involved in experiments GCF-B, ZEOGRID and NEUROCOG.

Upon completion of the scientific program 23 experiments results of a total mass of 20.10 kg will be handed over to the principal investigators.
