December 5, 2001, saw the signing of a contract between Russian Aviation and Space Agency, S.P.Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia, Yu.A.Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, and a citizen of the Republic of South Africa Mark Shuttleworth about his flight to the Russian Segment of ISS as a space flight participant within Visiting Crew 3.
During his stay on-board ISS RS, Mark Shuttleworth will perform a program of scientific experiment for the South-African cosmonaut, which envisages conducting 33 sessions for 5 experiments, including:

  • biomedical studies
- 8 sessions;
  • biotechnology studies
- 6 sessions;
  • educational project
- 1 session;
  • a study of Earth natural resources
- 18 sessions.

South-African cosmonaut

Biomedical research
"яCE" a study of effects of zero gravity on autonomous cardiovascular activity, properties of skeletal muscles, cosmonaut's body power inputs.

Biotechnology research
"SPC" a study of soluble protein crystallization process.
"ESCD" a study of embryonic and stem cells in zero gravity.

Educational and humanitarian projects
"EDUCATION"-SA an educational program to demonstrate zero-gravity effects to schoolchildren.

Study of Earth natural resources
"PLANKTON-LINZA"-SA a study of biological productivity factors of oceans in the areas of Africa's continental shelf and slope based on the data of visual and instrumented observations from space.

Implementation of the scientific program involves the use of 30 items of hardware and kits, with 13 hardware items being supplied by Contractor (M.Shuttleworth), and 17 items of hardware and kits being supplied by Russia.

Upon completion of the program, originators of the experiments are to receive 11 items of materials with the experimental results having a total mass of 5.89 kg.
Upon completion of their mission, the third visiting crew will leave on-board ISS RS the photographic and video equipment, as well as IBM Thinkpad notebook computers delivered in support of M.Shuttleworth's program.

Cosmonaut M.Shuttleworth Program needs the following resources:
