Science Research on ISS Russian Segment

Program of Utilization activities and Scientific Experiments for spaceflight participant Charles Simonyi

On June 26, 2006 Roskosmos and the Space Adventures company (USA) concluded a contract for a spaceflight of the U.S. Citizen Charles Simonyi as VC-12 spaceflight participant to the ISS Russian Segment.
During the stay onboard the ISS RS Charles Simonyi will perform the utilization program and two scientific experiments of the European Space Agency.

List of Activities for Spaceflight Participant Charles Simonyi onboard the ISS RS

Brief Description
1.
Photo and video imagery onboard the ISS RS for educational purposes.
2.
Participation in three MCC - ISS RS - MCC telebridges in real time mode.
Two telebridges are planned to be used for video data downlink to MCC and one telebridge will be used to hold a teleconference with Hungarian journalists at MCC.
3.
ONS Sigma software activities.
4.
Performance of Pille-ISS radiation safety experiment.
Acquisition of daily experimental data on value of the dose accumulated by spaceflight participant Ch. Simonyi from 10 flight sensors of dosimeter Pille-ISS during the VC-12 time.
5.
Performance of experiment Matrix Z1.
Study of high definition video equipment operation in spaceflight.
6.
Performance of ESA experiments:
SAMPLE (participation in microbiological sampling from different surfaces to the ISS RS); MUSCLE (assessment the astronaut deep-seated muscles atrophy in response to the effect of microgravity).
7.
Sessions of amateur radio communication.
8.
Demonstration of symbolic items onboard the ISS RS.

In compliance with the concluded Contract the following user's resources are allocated for VC-12 spaceflight participant:

CARGO TRAFFIC

Delivery of cargo items (including personal items) to the ISS RS

up to 15 kg

Return of cargo items

up to 5 kg

POWER CONSUMPTION
Total power consumed
up to 100 W
CREW TIME
ISS Flight Engineer (O. Kotov)
up to 5 h

The cargo traffic for VC-11 spaceflight participant is implemented by the following Russian transport spacecraft: Soyuz TMA-10 (delivery to the ISS RS) and Soyuz TMA-9 (return).
