Science Research on ISS Russian Segment

Implementation of the program of scientific experiments of a South-African cosmonaut

"EDUCATION"-SA Experiment

"EDUCATION"-SA experiment is included in the scientific program of South African cosmonaut Mark Shuttleworth and is a constituent part of the Russian Program for Implementation of Scientific and Technological Research Planned for the Fourth Manned Expedition ISS-4.

Objective:

A visual demonstration to schoolchildren of the difference between an object's mass and weight, action of reactive force, inertia of resting and moving bodies in zero gravity, as well as behavior of an object in zero gravity, as compared with terrestrial gravity environment.

Task:

Filming nine video sequences, providing a visual demonstration of:

  • the action of reactive force in zero gravity;
  • the difference between an object mass and weight in terrestrial gravity and zero gravity;
  • the action of inertia of rest and motion in zero gravity;
  • determing an object mass in zero gravity.

Scientific Equipment Used:

South African Educational Programs kit: glass and plastic balls, inflatable rubber balloon, paper airplane model, a stick on a rod with a ring and weights, South African flags, key chains, etc.

Support Equipment:

Digital video camera SONY DSR-PD150P.

Consumables:

Video cassette.

Expected Results:

Video footage taken during the experiment will be used for improving visual aids to make school teaching in South Africa more efficient and encourage schoolchildren to take interest in space exploration.
