Astrophysicists reveal the secret of cosmic 'standard candles'

Using data obtained from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory astrophysicists Dr. Marat Gilfanov (IKI, Russia; Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Germany) and his graduate student Akos Bogdan (Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Germany) have proved that so-called type Ia supernova are most likely originating from merging of two white dwarfs - dense stellar remnants.

The results are published in Nature (M.Gilfanov, A.Bogdan, An upper limit on the contribution of accreting white dwarfs to the type Ia supernova rate), 18 February 2010, Vol. 463, 7283

RUSSIAN SPACE NEUTRON DEYECTOR LEND OBSERVED LOCAL REGIONS WITH ENHANCED HYDROGEN CONTENT ON THE MOON

On September 15, 2009, the Russian-built and contributed Lunar Neutron Exploration Detector (LEND) experiment has resumed scientific data acquisition operations on board NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), after the spacecraft has been successfully inserted into its 50 km altitude, nominal lunar orbit for the mapping stage of the mission. The LRO mapping orbit is a circular orbit with a polar inclination, with the average altitude of 50 km, which allows LEND to perform high-resolution mapping of neutron emissions from the entire lunar surface with spatial resolution of 10 km. The duration of the LRO primary exploration mission phase for reconnaissance of lunar resources is one year, and after that the stage of science studies will take place of the Moon and circumlunar space.

This orbit transition has taken place after an incredibly successful LRO commissioning phase which continued from July until September, during which all spacecraft flight support systems and scientific instruments were tested and calibrated during lunar orbital space flight conditions. Analysis of commissioning phase telemetry data has indicated that all of the component sensors within the LEND instrument are working well in accordance with the functional requirements and that instrument is ready for nominal operations.

During the commissioning phase, the team of LEND experiment was able to undertake the first scientific studies of the Moon using the unique conditions of the LRO commissioning orbit; the altitude of periapsis was only 30 km above the south pole for a period of approximately two months. An unanticipated result was derived on the basis of the commissioning phase data acquisition --the permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) at south pole apparently do not coincide with the LEND mapping of so-called suppressed neutron regions (SNRs), which are likely to demonstrate a relatively large enhancement of hydrogen content within the upper meter of the lunar soil. Until now there has been a nearly universal consensus that if there is any enhanced hydrogen in the lunar polar regions, it must be associated with the known PSRs. The data already acquired by LEND in the commissioning phase of the LRO mission show that this nearly universally accepted hypothesis is apparently incorrect.

Several local SNRs were detected by LEND within the south polar region of the Moon, and the example associated with the southern polar crater Cabeus has the strongest hydrogen enhancement signature detected at this time. The Cabeus impact crater was recommended as the NASA LCROSS mission impact site by the LCROSS science team and NASA in part on the basis of initial LEND observations. At this point the LEND science team do not know why the Cabeus crater and other SNRs are regions with locally-enhanced hydrogen content, as well as in what specific form (e.g., implanted hydrogen from the solar wind, subsurface water ice, hydrated minerals) the detected hydrogen is manifested. All of the LRO data collected up to this point and in the future from the entire scientific payload will be used by the lunar science community to formulate a new hypothesis for the polar region hydrogen patterns observed by LEND.

Principal Investigator of LEND experiment is Dr. Igor Mitrofanov (Space Research Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences). The instrument LEND was developed under a State contract with the Russian Federal Space Agency. The instrument is contributed by Russia to United States for operation on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission in accordance with a bi-lateral Implementation Agreement between Roscosmos and NASA. In Russia the LEND experiment science cooperation includes the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, All-Russia Institute of Physics of Atomic Reactors, All-Russia Institute of Mineral Resources, A.A.Blagonravov Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University. Within the USA the LEND science team includes the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, University of Arizona, University of Maryland, Catholic University and the Computer Sciences Corporation. In December 2004 Russian instrument LEND was competitively selected for flight on NASA's LRO mission, as the first spaceborne neutron telescope with high spatial resolution in the history of space exploration.

Among the elected is the Russian astrophysicist, the member of Russian Academy of sciences Professor Rashid Sunyaev, Chief Scientist at the Space Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics.

  • On 14th of May, 2009 Dr. Marc Allen and the NASA representatives visited the laboratory of space gamma-ray spectroscopy, where the development of Russian instruments LEND and DAN is currently in progress. These instruments will be installed onboard the NASA "Moon orbital infiltrator" and "Martian scientific laboratory" spacecraft.

  • Russian astrophysicists unearthed a mystery of luminance of the Galaxy in the X-ray.

The galactic fog is thinning. The mysterious luminance of the galactic disk in the X-rays, which was discovered more than 25 years ago, finally invoked its explanation. For the first time, by the group of the astrophysicists from the Space Research Institute RAS under auspices of the Michael Revnivtzev, it was shown by experiments, that the x-ray of our galactic disk comes up because of the emission of millions low-energy sources. The results of the research are published in a regularly scheduled issue of the magazine 'Nature' dated on the 30th of April 2009.

The reviewing of the Galaxy, conducted with help of the space observatories, discovered that its disk is glowing in the x-rays, but as for nature of this phenomenon it remained to be unknown.
Michael Revnivtzev and his colleagues from IKI RAS put forward and demonstratively worked out this hypothesis concerning the fact that x-ray consists of the emission of the plenty low-energy sources. For its corroboration the authors applied for ultra deep observation of the exact path of the galactic plane by the orbital observation Chandra (NASA).
In 2008 this observation was conducted. The total time was about million of seconds, that is 11 days of constant observations of the exact point in the sky. As a result the unique information about the galactic sources in the area of the Galaxy center was received. In the circle of radius just 2,5 arc minutes (that is 10 times smaller than the size of the full Moon in the sky) 473 separate sources of the x-ray were found. The majority of them are so-called white dwarfs and stars with active coronas.
On the basis of the received information it's possible to confirm that x-ray of the Galaxy is the unit of rays of millions low-energy sources. Consequently the mystery, which puzzled the astrophysicists for several decades, was unearthed. Also the unique information, which forces us to see in a new light at stellar population of our Galaxy, was received.

  • New results of Russian Scientists on the studies of Dark Energy

An international team of scientists (Space Research Institute of RAS, Russia; Harvard-Smitsonian Center for Astrophysics, USA, and other Institutes in the US and Europe) led by IKI's Alexey Vikhlinin have recently reported new results on studies of Dark Energy through growth of galaxy clusters.

This study confirms a recent accelerated expansion of the Universe with a new technique, independent of distance-based method. In combination with other cosmological datasets (supernovae, baryonic acoustic oscillations in the galaxy power spectra, cosmic microwave background), the new cluster data constrains the Dark Energy equation of state within 5\% of the value $w=-1$, expected if Dark Energy is equivalent to Einstein's cosmological constant.

  • The 2008 Rossi Prize of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society is awarded to Pat Henry, Alexey Vikhlinin(IKI), Steve Allen, Maxim Markevitch(IKI) for their pioneering work on the use of X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies as cosmological probes.

  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Crafoord Prize in Mathematics and Astronomy 2008 for mathematical discoveries that are significant for the fundamental laws of nature and for research on black holes and the early Universe.

The astronomy part of Crafoord Prize is awarded to Rashid Alievich Sunyaev, Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia and Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Garching, Germany, 'for his decisive contributions to high-energy astrophysics and cosmology, in particular processes and dynamics around black holes and neutron stars and demonstration of the diagnostic power of structures in the background radiation".

The laureate in astronomy, Rashid Sunyaev, Head of the Department of High Energy Astrophysics, Space Research Institute (IKI), Russian Academy of Sciences, has studied the most extreme processes in the Universe and developed theoretical models of how black holes devour matter and the origin of the structure of the cosmological background radiation. His description of how matter drawn towards a black hole forms a thin, rapidly rotating disc is essential if we are to understand how black holes can be the most powerful sources of radiation in the Universe. Sunyaev?s work with the cosmological background radiation has inspired measurements that provide clues to the creation and structure of the Universe. This radiation derives from a period when the Universe was only a few hundred thousand years old and contains information about what happened during Big Bang. On its journey to us it has also been influenced by the distribution of matter in clusters of galaxies billions of years later.
