ASKAP user community workshops ideas

Members of the ASKAP Science Survey Teams and other potential ASKAP users met this week at the Marsfield headquarters of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science in a one-day workshop to discuss the next steps for ASKAP in the transition to a full telescope system.
The morning session concentrated on a comprehensive update from the ASKAP team, with topics including recent commissioning activities with the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA) тАУ the first six ASKAP antennas installed with phased array feed (PAF) receivers тАУ data processing, and the ASKAP data science archive, as well as recent success with the design enhancement program, development and deployment of the Mk II PAF receivers for ASKAP.
During the afternoon, representatives of the Survey Science Projects were able to discuss planning for the transition to the full ASKAP telescope, thoughts on what they saw as the biggest challenge for the early science team and how to maximise the scientific capabilities of their projects.
The attendees were also given the chance to tour the workshop at Marsfield, where pre-production of the Mk II PAF receivers is well underway.
