eVLBI PC possibilities.

Specs:

The following specifications were decided to be the minimum requirement for
new disk based recording systems:
- Any moderately fast modern CPU
- 1 GB RAM
o Space for increasing this in the future significantly
- Motherboard with multiple PCI bus, including PCI-X and legacy PCI
- Dual Ethernet (either on board or using PCI cards). Minimum one gigabit NIC
o Preferably dual gigabit NIC
- Case with 4x 5.25" externally accessible drive bays for removable
IDE disks. Internal space for additional non-removable disks
o Tower and rack-mount possibilities
- Firewire either as additional PCI card or on-board
- Dual CPU possibility considered advantageous
- Preferably with two PATA controllers and on board SATA

Redundant power supplies were considered not necessary

Recommendations

Tyan K8WE system seems the best bet. It is a good quality motherboard
and suite our purposes well. A rackmount case is the prefered option
for all observatories.

The Dell systems seem to be more expensive for no obvious advantage
(the motherboards are probably up to the job) but the cases are not
suitable for our needs (not enough extrnall assesible options).

Of the suppliers, comnet and digicor seem to be the most
competent. The digicor quote is very competitive and seems to be
better quality components. Jim Lovell and Edrward King have used
AwardOne, but have had some less than ideal service.

As the quotes are for slightly different specs a summary is

Tyan K8WE, rackmount, 1 CPU, 1 GB ram

Awardone $3063ex
Comnet $3030ex
Digicor $3016ex
Auspac $2892ex

2nd CPU, 2 GB ram

Awardone +$272+?ram?
Comnet +$660
Digicor +$506
Auspac +$720

Points which need to be discussed:

- Is everyone happy with this choice?
- Do we want 1 of 2 CPU? Does this depend on the observatories?
2 CPUs really require 2 GB ram total
- Do we want a faster CPU?
- Do we want onsite 3yr warrenty for about $300?
- The are a number of options for removable IDE disks. Do we go for
something fancy or the simplest solution?
- Does anyone want rackmount monitor/keyboard for about $1500?
VGA over IP soltion? (Remote monitoring)
- For ~$100 we can go for a newer motherboard from Tyan. Should we go in
this direction.

Motherboards.

A survey of available Intel, Dell and Tyan motherboards found the
following which seem to match the required specifications.

Tyan Thunder K8WE
o Dual AMD CPU
o Dual gigabit NIC
o No on board video
o 6 PCI slots (4 PCI-X or 33 MHz, 2 PCI-Express)
o 4 SATA II controllers (4 disks), 1 PATA controller (2 disks)
o On board firewire
Advantages:
- PCI specifications look like they suit us well
- SATA II controllers (can add more than 4 SATA disks in the future)
- On board firewire
Disadvantages
- On on board video (use one PCI-E slot)*
- Not enough PATA controllers. Need to add PATA controller card (use one PCI slot)*
* Will have one PCI-X slot free once setup and once PCI-E

Tyan Tomcat i7210

o Single Intel P4 CPU
o Dual gigabit NIC
o Inboard video
o 5 PCI slots (2xPCI-66, 3xPCI-32)
o 2 SATA controllers (2 disk), 2 PATA controllers (4 disks)
Advantageous
o Price
Dis advantages
o Single CPU
o Need firewire PCI card*
* 1x PCI-66 slot free plus 1xPCI-33 free after setup

Dell Precision 670 (Full system)
o Dual Intel P4 CPU
o Single gigabit NIC
o 5 PCI slots (3xPCI-100, 1xPCI-32, 2 PCI-E)
o 2 SATA controllers (2 disk), 2 PATA controllers (4 disks)
o On board firewire

Disadvantages:
- Single gigabit NIC. Would have to add second gNIC.
- PATA and SATA disks on same internal PCI bus (looks like)
- PATA and SATA controllers may be connected to PCI-33 bus
- Need PCI-E videocard*
- Need PCI gigabitNIC*
- Probably need PCI PATA controller*
- Case only allows 3 5.25" externals bays (even after removing cdrom)
- Expensive for no obvious advantage
* 1 PCI-E left after setup

Dell PowerEdge 1800
o Dual Intel P4 CPU
o Single gigabit NIC
o 6 PCI slots (2xPCI-100, 1xPCI-66, 1xPCI-32, 2 PCI-E)
o 6 hotswap SATA controllers (6 disk), ? PATA controllers
o Onboard video
o SCSI option
o On board firewire
o rackmount option

Disadvantages:
- Single gigabit NIC. Would have to add second gNIC (in PCI-E)
- May need PCI PATA controller*
- Need to add firewire PCI
- Cannot have 4 externally accessible disks
* 1 PCI-E, 1xPCI-100 left after setup
