Atlas of Monte Carlo Models of Dust Extinction in Galaxies

An Atlas of Monte Carlo Models of Dust Extinction in Galaxies
for Cosmological Applications

Andrea Ferrara, Simone Bianchi, Andrea Cimatti and Carlo Giovanardi 1999, ApJS, 123, 437.

Abstract: We present an extensive study of the radiative transfer in dusty galaxies based on Monte Carlo simulations. The main output of these simulations are the attenuation curves A_l (i.e. the ratio between the observed, dust extinguished, total intensity to the intrinsic unexstinguished one of the galaxy as a function of wavelength). We have explored the dependence of A_l on a conspicuous set of quantities (Hubble type, inclination, dust optical thickness, dust distribution and extinction properties) for a large wavelength interval, ranging from 1250A to the K band, thus finally providing a comprehensive atlas of dust extinction in galaxies, which is electronically available. This study is particularly suitable for inclusion into galaxy formation evolution models and to directly interpret observational data on high redshift galaxies. (The ApJS electronic version of the paper is available here )

Description of the data files: in each of the attenuation law files [att] or absorbed energy files [abs], the basic table element gives values of the attenuation law and fraction of total energy absorbed, respectively, as a function of wavelength and optical depth of the model in the V-band. e.g. a basic table element:

For [att] files of spiral galaxy models the basic table elements is repeated for the 9 values of inclination 9.3, 22.9, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. The set of 9 basic table elements are provided for each of the B/T values 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0. For the fraction of total energy absorbed (file [abs]), the basic table elements are given for each of the B/T values. For the models of elliptical galaxy with dust disk (E_ME, E_SE), the basic table element in [att] files is provided for the same inclinations as for the spiral galaxy models and oly once in the [abs] files. The files for the models of ellipticals with spherical distributions of dust (E_MC, E_SC, E_MJ, E_SJ, E_MR, E_SR) have only one basic table element. Because of the spherical symmetry, [abs] files simply contains the values (1-[att]).
