Research lines: During my career I have worked on several aspects of galaxy formation and evolution, mainly with an observational approach and exploiting multi-wavelength data. My previous work demonstrates that I am one of the major experts in the use of innovative observational techniques and instruments, such as diffraction-limited observations with adaptive optics and integral field and multi-object spectroscopy in the near-IR. I have used these skills to study the morphology, dynamics, star formation and chemical abundances in high redshift and local galaxies, obtaining groundbreaking discoveries in the field. In particular, in the framework of the "High redshift galaxy Spectroscopic Imaging survey in the Near-IR with SINFONI" (SINS), I have studied the dynamics and the physical properties of a representative sample of high-z star-forming galaxies using integral field spectroscopy and AO. I

have provided major contributions in the development of data reduction tools for high spatial resolution spectroscopic data, and to the detailed modeling of the dynamics of massive disks at z~2. I have led the study the evolution of scaling relations as the Tully-Fisher and the SchmidtKennicutt law (e.g. Cresci et al. 2009, ApJ, 697, 115). The results of the SINS survey have a large impact on the community, pointing to smooth accretion and rapid secular evolution as main mechanisms driving the early evolution of galaxies, in contrast to more violent major mergers. I have also used the unique capabilities of 3D spectroscopy for the study of metallicity and dynamics for a sample of z~3 galaxies in the framework of the AMAZE (Assessing the Mass Abundances redshift Evolution) and LSD (Lyman-break galaxies Stellar populations and Dynamics) projects with SINFONI+AO, that have allowed the determination of the massmetallicity (MZ) relation beyond z~2 and confirmed the important role of gas inflow for the evolution of high-z galaxies. In this framework, I have discovered "inverted" metallicity gradients in a sample of z~3, that have been interpreted as the very first evidence for large infall of metal poor gas in these high-z star forming galaxies (Cresci et al. 2010, Nature 467, 811). Moreover, our group has recently obtained a breakthrough in the study of metallicity properties of galaxies with the discovery of the Fundamental Metallicity Relation (FMR, Mannucci, Cresci et al. 2010, MNRAS, 408, 211, Cresci et al. 2011, MNRAS, 421, 262). Metallicity in galaxies not only increases with stellar mass, but also decreases sharply with increasing SFR. In other words, mass, SFR and metallicity define a surface in a 3D space, and the residual dispersion across this surface is exceptionally small, about 0.05dex (~12%), about half of the scatter of the MZ relation of the same galaxies. Even more interestingly, the FMR seems not evolve with redshift up to z~2.5, representing an important starting point for any model of galaxy formation and evolution. I'm also using integral field spectroscopy to study the presence and the effects of AGN and QSO outflows on the host galaxies, using both infrared data for high-z QSOs, and optical data for local Seyfert galaxies. Our group was the first to show star formation quenching in a QSO host galaxy due to powerful AGN driven outflows, and it is currently leading the research in the field. I have also studied the morphology of distant galaxies through near-IR imaging assisted with AO, and developed innovative techniques to fully exploit this kind of data due to the rapid variation of the PSF. Thanks to these techniques, it was possible to study NIR galaxy morphology with resolutions up to 0.1" in the framework of SWAN, a small survey of ~30 arcmin2 around bright stars with NACO at the VLT, that has allowed to study for the first time the morphology of particularly red galaxies (Cresci et al. 2006, A&A, 458, 385). I am also involved in the study of star formation in the nuclear regions of active galaxies and in local dwarf galaxies, as well as in the determination of the Supernova Rate as a function of galaxy mass. I'm also collaborating with several instrumentation projects, such as NIRSpec for JWST, the Euclid satellite, the MOONS and ERIS instruments for the VLT, both for the testing and calibration as well as the scientific characterization and data reduction development. I have a large observing experience at the largest telescopes in the world, and several ongoing international collaborations.
