Comets at TIRGO
Fragmets in the Hyakutake comets
These two images were obtained at TIRGO on March 25, 1996, in the J band. The bright spot on the
upper left is the comet nucleus, while a fragment moving away from the nucleus is visible near the
center of each image. Comparing the two images it is possible to see that the velocity of the fragment is
17 m/sec.
The impact of SL9 on Jupiter
These images have been obtained at TIRGO in July
1994 when the fragments of comet Shoemaker­Levy 9
(1993e) collided with Jupiter.
The planet and its satellities Io and Europa were imaged
before (upper) and after (lower) the collisions, using a
narrow­band filter at the wavelength of a deep methan
absorption band (2.35 micron). At these wavelength
only the polar caps of the planets can be seen. The
results of the collisions are the spots near the southern
polar cap of Jupiter.
