FIRPO MESSAGE #3

Last modified on November 25, 1996 by A. Richichi

Performance of the 1.23 mirror / November 1996

Dear FIRPO friends,

this is a report after my direct experience with the 1.23 mirror,
and after Leonardo has reduced most of the photometry collected
by VC/ChL in September.

The first point is that the detection limit for LO seems to be around K=7-7.2 at 1 sigma. This seems in agreement with the findings of BS's run in August.
However, what is worrying is that I got the feeling that it is now much more difficult to find the sources in the eyepiece of the main mirror. Luckily, the offsets seem to work just fine, even on jumps of 2-3 degrees. So if you cannot see the source (probably the case if it's fainter than V=6 and the Moon is at a high phase), please use the offsets from a nearby bright star, as listed in the predictions.
The photometry collected with LUNOC is very difficult to analyze, for sources fainter than K about 6. Here you can see the recorded data (K3) for the star SAO 76511, with V=8.4 and spectrum F2.
Andrea
