NICS (Near Infrared Camera Spectrometer) is the camera/spectrometer that the Infrared Group at Arcetri Observatory is designing and building for the National Telescope Galileo (TNG, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo), on behalf of the Italian astronomical community.
The next three sections will provide a summary of the main features and of the expected performances of the instrument, while the following sections will separately describe the different parts of the instruments: optical system, mechanics and cryogenics, control and data acquisition elettronics with the related software.
This document is not aimed at providing a detailed description of the various parts of the instrument, the reader will be addressed to specific papers and reports for technical details.
