ASD-002 SDSS Observers' Report for 2.5m secondary incident

Stephanie Snedden, Scot Kleinman, Ellyne Kinney, Jeffrey Hayes, Dan Long

Abstract:

The SDSS 2.5m secondary has developed a crack in it. The exact time of the appearance of the crack is not known. The Observers were asked to analyse any and all data from the October 1999 dark run (which spanned the dates 1 October 1999 to 15 October 1999) for any clues or evidence that the secondary was in trouble during the dark run. In this report we outline the last few weeks worth of work in on the analysis. We report that there is very little information to be obtained from the data on-hand, (i.e. night logs, TPM logs, etc.) and that what data there is, is in an almost unusable state because of inadequate code for the analysis, little or no documentation on the use of that code, and ill-considered choices for the type of data to be logged. We find that there is no compelling evidence for secondary mirror distress during the dark run, and we make recommendations for improvements for the types of data to be recorded, tools for its analysis and, how this data is to be archived for future use.
