SDSS Progress Reports

Fiducials and Motion Controls: November 12 and 13, 1998

Caption above photo

On Thursday, 11/12, Bill Boroski, Bob Nagel, Steve Bastian and John Davis continued to pursue the oscillation in the windscreen and lubricating the cone bearings.

Bill was able to install the bar coder for the altitude drive.

These are close-ups of the screws which back out of the planetary gear spline. It is these screws which were found to cause the oscillation in the control system. They have been tightened and the oscillation characteristics are no longer appearing. (sorry for the focus; closeups are tough)

The bearing assembly for the windscreen.

On Friday, 11/13, Charlie Briegel continues to work on motion controls. Same chair, different sweater. If you squint your eyes, you can see the tiny monitor on the shelf over his head. This monitors the movement of the enclosure. If you ask him, he's had a productive session.

At this time, the clouds were gathering over the site, so the telescope is moved into closing position by Charlie. (its difficult to show motion in still photos).

Bill has also installed the bar coder for the azimuth drive.

And Steve along with Bob Nagel clean the bearings with mineral spirits in preparation for applying the new lubricant.

As this is published, the lubriant has arrived and is being applied as I write.
