SDSS Camera Transport to Enclosure

SDSS Camera Transport to Enclosure

The late afternoon (10/23) weather cleared beautifully and the camera was transported to the 2.5m enclosure.

Mike, Jim, and Jeff Pier take the strain on the camera. Mike positions the truck in the 3.5m enclosure and the camera is lifted onto the truck.

APO staff (Dave Woods, Jon Davis, Jon Brinkmann) as well as Larry Bartosek/Fermi participate in this maneuver; another valuable hands-on experience!

APO's most experienced pickup driver (Jon Davis) is assigned the task of driving the camera to the enclosure, while Jim, Mike, Dave Woods ride with the camera in the back, and et al "chase" the truck with cameras and applause. At the end of the trip Jim is happy to report that Jon never pulls more than 2/10 of a G!

Jim and Mike take up the task of offloading the camera from the truck with the main hoist and transferring the load to the jib hoist to 'walk' the camera into position.

The enclosure is pulled off the telescope to position the hoists and then rolled back to move the camera to the telescope. The doghouse is shown in position on the west side of the telescope.

This is a very tedious walk and requires a lot of concentration. Folks concentrated so much their faces vanished!

The next installment of pictures is listed on APO's home page under 2.5m Telescope: Camera Mounting.
