Arctic Circle Northern Lights

 

November 2 – 11, 2010

From 69 degrees north, your cruise aboard the ms Midnatsol weaves along Norway’s breathtaking coastline from Bergen to Kirkenes. Dave Eicher, Astronomy magazine’s editor, will lead the hunt for the aurora borealis. There is also an optional extension available to cruise roundtrip Bergen to Bergen.

Tour includes:

  • Roundtrip international air on SAS from selected gateways

  • Domestic Norwegian air

  • Airport/hotel/vessel/transfers

  • 1-night hotel Bergen

  • 1-night Kirkenes

  • 7-day cruise aboard the Norwegian ms Midnatsol

Arrive Bergen and transfer to your hotel for the evening.

Thursday, November 4, 2010Sail from Bergen, Norway
After breakfast, enjoy stroll around the old wooden buildings in the Bryggen Wharf, a remnant of Bergen’s days as a leading port of the medieval Hanseatic League.

This evening you will be transferred to your vessel for the Norwegian Coastal Voyage northbound in search of the aurora borealis. (B/D)

Friday, November 5, 2010Maloy – Torvik – Molde – Kristiansund
Sail across a stretch called the Stadthavet toward Torvik. Stop at the Art Nouveau town, Alesund. Call at Molde, a favorite of Henrik Ibsen, famous Norwegian playwright. The ship navigates the Hustadvika, a belt of islets and skerries before docking at Kristiansund. (B/L/D)

Saturday, November 6, 2010Trondheim - Rovik
Arrive in Trondheim early, the Viking capital, with time to visit Norway’s largest medieval church, Nidaros Cathedral, and the restored Archbishop’s Residence. You will then sail out through the beautiful Trondheimsfjord, past Hitra, island of deer and lonely Grip. At the day’s end, the vessel calls at Rovik. (B/L/D)

Sunday, November 7. 2010Ornes – Bodo – Stamsund - Svolvaer
Cross the Arctic Circle at 66 degrees. Pass islands and skerries of majestic rock formations. After Bodo, the ship heads out to open sea for the Lofoten Islands, with their picturesque cabins on stilts and weathered wooden racks of drying cod. In the evening, you will navigate the narrow Raftsund Strait, passing the looming crags of the Trollfjord. (B/L/D)

Monday, November 8, 2010Harstad – Finnsnes – Tromso – Skjervoy
This morning pass the medieval Trondenes church before calling at Harstad. Afterward, sail across the Vagsfjord, past the great island of Senja and its farmland, pine trees, and plunging peaks. A stop at Tromso where 19th century sailors called before heading off on Arctic expeditions. (B/L/D)

Tuesday, November 9, 2010Hammerfest – Havoysund – Honningsvag – Kjollefjord
Finnmark’s landscape, austere in its beauty, teems with wildlife. Watch for rookeries of puffins and gannets along the cliffs, and pods of orca, or Killer Whales, hunting for herring. After calling at Honningsvag, the ship heads east toward the pretty fishing villages of Kjollefjord, Mehamn, and Berlevag. (B/L/D)
