Exclusive SpaceCast Report http://www.spacer.com NASA Says Lunar Ice Rumors Wrong Washington, DC Feb. 10, 1998 - Data being studied from the lunar orbiting Prospector satellite cannot be quantified as having detected ice on the Moon, the head of the project's science team told SpaceCast Monday in an exclusive interview. Dr. Alan Binder, Principal Investigator for the Lunar Prospector Project, said by telephone from the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California that the data is of unexpectedly high quality - but that analysis has so far proved to be a non conclusive result. "We're glad people everywhere are interested in this information, but we can make no conclusive statements yet, even on a preliminary basis," Binder said. Lectures at JPL on Near-Earth Asteroids Привет всем! MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION PASADENA, CALIF. 91109. TELEPHONE (818) 354-5011 http://www.jpl.nasa.gov Contact: Stephanie R. Zeluck FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 9, 1998 JPL PRESENTS A SEARCH FOR NEAR-EARTH APPROACHING ASTEROIDS "Destination Earth: JPL's Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking Program" will be the theme for two free public lectures, one on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in JPL's von Karman Auditorium, the other on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in The Forum at Pasadena City College. Seating is limited and will be on a first-come, first- served basis. The lecture will be presented by Eleanor Helin, principal investigator of the Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) program. Helin has been active in planetary science and astronomy for nearly 35 years at JPL and Caltech. She initiated the Planet- Crossing Asteroid Survey from Palomar Observatory in the 1970's, coordinated the International Near-Earth Asteroid Survey in the 1980's, and now leads the NEAT program. NEAT is an autonomous celestial observatory located at the U.S. Air Force's Ground-based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance site on Mt. Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii. It is designed to complete a comprehensive search of the sky for near-Earth asteroids and comets. Since beginning operation in December 1995, NEAT has discovered more than 15,000 objects, including 26 near-Earth asteroids, two long-period comets and the very unique object temporarily numbered 1996 PW, the most eccentric asteroid yet known. NEAT is the first autonomous observing program of its type. No JPL personnel are required to operate the telescope on site in Hawaii. A Sun Sparc computer runs the observing system through the night and transmits the data back to JPL each morning. This lecture is part of the von Karman Lecture Series sponsored monthly by the JPL Media Relations Office. A web site on the lecture series is located at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/lecture. For information call the JPL Media Relations Office at (818) 354-5011. =SANA=
Lunar Prospector Status Report #18 Feburary 9, 1998 - 12:00 noon EST (3:00 p.m. PST) The Lunar Prospector Mission Control Center at NASA's Ames Research Center reported that, as of 8:21 p.m. (PST) on Sat., Jan. 31, 1998, the spacecraft continues to operate well. The past weekend, a minor glitch with the spectrometer instrument electronics occurred, in which the incoming data stream for the vehicle's three spectrometers was temporarily halted. Mission controllers decided to power the spectrometer electronics subsystem on and off, which corrected the problem. All instruments were reconfigured and reported to be operating properly. A total of 38 commands were communicated to the spacecraft to resolve this situation. Current statistics regarding the spacecraft and its instruments, as reported by Mission Operations Manager Marcie Smith (at 10:00 a.m. (PST) on Feb. 2, 1998) are as follows: Orbit Number: 256 Data Downlink Rate: 3600 bps Spacecraft Spin Rate: 11.94 rpm Spin Axis Attitude: Longitude: 251 deg Latitude: 89.2 deg Trajectory: Periselene: 96 km Aposelene: 104 km Period: 118 minutes duration Occultations: 46 minutes duration Eclipses: 32 minutes duration Hа сегодня все, пока! =SANA=
Images Of Mars '98 Landing Zone Reveal Strange New Terrain Привет всем! MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION PASADENA, CALIF. 91109. TELEPHONE (818) 354-5011 http://www.jpl.nasa.gov Contact: Diane Ainsworth VIDEO ADVISORY February 10, 1998 IMAGES OF MARS '98 LANDING ZONE REVEAL STRANGE NEW TERRAIN New images of the Mars '98 landing zone, located in the frigid south polar region of Mars, will air Wednesday, Feb. 11 on NASA TV. The images reveal the first close-up views of this strange, layered terrain, which will become the site of NASA's 1998 Mars Polar Lander mission. Ground fog obscures the surface in the raw images, shown on the left of the screen, while image-processing techniques, shown on the right of the screen, expose ground features in great detail. The images show an array of light and dark mottled patterns, and swirling bands of eroded, layered rock reminiscent of the edges of Alaskan ice sheets. Also included in the NASA TV file is animation of the 1998 lander mission, footage of payload testing at JPL and payload integration at Lockheed Martin Astronautics, Denver, and brief interviews with JPL project representatives. The Mars Polar Lander is one of two spacecraft to be launched to Mars in late 1998 and early 1999 to continue NASA's program of robotic exploration of the red planet. The 1998 lander will touch down in the southern polar region of Mars in December 1999 and begin a three-month surface mission to dig for traces of subsurface water. Meanwhile, its sister ship, the Mars Climate Orbiter, will begin a two-year mapping mission to profile the Martian atmosphere and map the surface. NASA TV is available on GE-2, transponder 9C at 85 degrees west longitude, vertical polarization, with a frequency of 3880 MHz, and audio of 6.8 MHz. Video news files air at 9 a.m., 12:00 noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Pacific time. =SANA=
