The Amateur Astronomers Association has an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation that allows us to have observing sessions at North-South Lake, located in Haines Falls, New York, in the Catskill Mountains.ˆàThis is an exceptionally dark location for deep-sky observing.

Our agreement allows only club members to participate.ˆàContact the event chair (below) to reserve a spot.ˆàThe observing location is locked.ˆàEither you willˆàbe given the combination to unlockˆàtheˆàgate or you willˆàarrange to meet someone who has the combination.

Observing Dates

The observing dates for 2016 are given below.ˆà Each pair of dates represents a Saturday and a Sunday.ˆà If Saturday is cancelled due to weather conditions, we will go on Sunday night.ˆà If Saturday is not cancelled, members have the option of staying over for an additional day of observing.

Take the New York State Thruway (Interstate Route 87) to Exit 20 (Saugerties).ˆàGet on New York State Route 32 North.ˆàAfter about 6 miles bear left onto Route 32A West, which merges into Route 23A.ˆàEnter the village of Haines Falls.ˆàMake the first right onto County Route 18.ˆàTake 18 about 2 miles to where it ends, at the park entrance.ˆàBear right.ˆàThereˆàwill be a gate with a combination lock.ˆàYou should know the combination or have arranged to meet someone who does (see above).ˆàBE SURE TO CLOSE THE GATE AFTER YOU ENTER OR LEAVE.ˆàProceed until the road ends at a parking area.
