Space System
METEOR-3

Russian (WIN)

Space meteorological system Meteor-3 presently operating in Russia provide possibilities for acquiring data for hydrometeorological and helio/geophysical support as well as global environmental monitoring. System's spacecrafts are located on near-polar circular orbits (hight approx. 1200 km, inclination 82,5°).

137.850 MHz - data transmission to local acquisition stations

The scientific instrument package onboard the Meteor-3 spacecraft provides for regular instant acquisition of images of cloudiness and Earth surface in visible and infra-red bands, data on air temperature and humidity, sea surface temperature and clouds temperature. Acquired data on corpuscular and X-ray irradiance and total emitted radiation energy are supplied to geophysical division. The ozone layer is being monitored.
Beyond regular scientific hardware, the Meteor-3 spacecrafts are often equipped with experimental and research instruments. The Meteor-3 satellite No.5, which was launched Aug.15,1991, carries still operating scanning spectrometer for global ozone distribution mapping (TOMS instrument, developed and produced by NASA). Instrument parameters:
6 spectral channels in UV spectral band (312.5; 317.5; 331.3; 339.8; 360.0; 380.0 nm);
ground resolution 63x63 sq. km in nadir; 83x83 sq. km average;
swath width approx. 2900 km.
The Meteor-3 spacecraft No.8 carries the NASA-produced instrument SAGE-II to monitor distribution of aerozoles, ozone, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and spectrophotometer. SAGE-II instrument operates in 7 spectral bands (385, 448, 452, 525, 600, 936 and 1020 nm) and allows for restoration of vertical profile of atmospheric components with vertical resolution 1 km in altitude span 10-40 km, using absorbtion method based on attenuation of direct solar radiation passing through the Earth atmosphere.
Spectrophotometer SFM-2 performs registration using absorbtion method in 4 channels in frequency band 0.25-0.6 um and allows for restoration of vertical ozone profile with resolution approx. 5 km up to 80-km altitude.
