Horizons in Physics
22nd-23rd June 2009 A series of talks and demonstration lectures for year 11-12 pupils to show the fun and exciting side of Physics. It is held usually during the las t week of June. The event is held on tw o days w ith three lectures per day in a lecture theatre on the main QUB campus and attrac ts approximately 200 students per day. Students also have the opportunity to experience the QU B teaching and student facilities and for example, visit the Students' Union for lunch. Mathematics & Physics Schools Lecture Programme
Throughout school year Lectures on a wide range of topics in Mathematics and Physics are offered to Schools throughout N I. The lec tures show the range of exciting science studied by QU B academics and are highly visual, some with demons trations. Mos t are linked to the current GC SE and/or AS level curriculum. QU B academics can either visit the schools , or school groups come to QU B. Contac t: w.ruther ford@qub.ac.uk School of Mathematics & Physics

Maths & Physics Open Days
10th-11th September 2009 All 6th for m students in N I and RoI interested in studying Physics & Mathematics are invited to come along to our Open Days. Students can come along to the New Mathematics Depar tment and the Department of Physics and Astronomy , there they can see demonstrations of these fundamental sciences, and talk to s taff and s tudents about furthering what they learn at A-Level or Leav ing Cert to the very frontiers of knowledge. ENTINUS YOUNG INNOVATORS COMPETE IN RENO, NEVADA

The Intel International Science & Engineering Fair ( ISEF) is the premiere science & engineering competition in the world exclusively for s tudents in grades 912. Each year, millions of students worldwide compete in local and schoolsponsored science fairs; Eoin & Jonathan at the IS EF the winners of these events go on to participate in Intel ISEF-affiliated regional and s tate fairs from which the best win the oppor tunity to attend the Intel ISEF. Eoin McMeel and Jonathan D owning who took part in Young Innov ators , the Northern Ireland regional fair, both attended ISEF 2009 in Reno, Nevada.

Young Scientists & Engineers Fair 2009
Last year a group of four A-level Physics students from St Patricks Academy , Dungannon,, including Ciara Morgan-Feir, took part in the Engineering Education Scheme organised by Sentinus . The students prepared a projec t studying the feasibility of using renewable energy at Dale Far m's Dunmanbridge plant near Cookstown. Throughout the project the group worked closely with Gary Shields an engineer from Dale Far m and Dr David Mc IlveenWright an engineer from the University of Uls ter at Jordanstown. Ciara decided to enter the projec t in the Big Bang, Young Scientists and Engineers Fair . About 250 entrants competed for the title of U K Young Scientist or Technologist of the year . Ciara was chosen as one of the finalis ts. She said: "I was delighted to have been picked as a finalis t - it meant a free laptop and a trip to 10 Downing Street for tea with the Minis ter for Science, Lord Drayson. However, it also mean t another gruelling day of judging. The judges were looking for a representative of science and engineering in the U K - an ambassador to visit schools and talk about science and technology . Later on at the award ceremony-- likened by host Kate Humble to the Br it's or BAFTAs of the science year we were welcomed by an eight foot tall robot called Titan. The N ational Science Competition awards were given las t of over 20 other awards. At the ceremony I was awarded firs t runner up in technology in the UK and received a trophy, netbook computer, certificate and a tr ip to the Shell Eco- Marathon in Germany later Ciara with Lord Drayson at 10 Downing Street this year."

K'Nex Challenge
Sentinus have once again held the Heats for the Junior Engineers for Britain K'Nex C hallenge in primary schools across Northern Ireland during May . Around 120 primary schools took part in the heats with the top 5 teams from each Education and Library Board progressing to the Nor thern Ireland Final at `Sentinus Young Innovators 2009' in the Odyssey Arena, Belfas t th on Thursday 18 June. The challenges involved a design and build exercise using K'Nex Cons truction Kits. The pupils had an excellent opportunity to let their imaginations r un riot and build structures using their skills and ideas. A great deal of fun was had by all.

Local Ambassadors
Receive National Awards
At a recent event at the House of Lords two STEM Ambassadors from Northern Ireland gained national recognition for their work with schools and young people.

Civil Engineer Paul McCauley wor king wit h pupils from St A nne's Primar y School, Cor key

Civil Engineer Paul Mc Cauley receiv ed t he STEMNET Ins piration Award f or his work with St Anne's Primary Sc hool, Corkey as part of the Civil Engineering in Primary School's project, run by the Institution of Civil Engineers. Ciaran Kinney from St. Annes Primary said, "Paul was the central figure in a six-man team that helped our school win t he Rolls-Royce Science Prize 2008. This is one of the most prestigious science priz es in t he U.K. When he enters the room Paul energises and ent hus es the students, who all look forward to seeing him." At the same event Ciaran Elliott was highly commended in the Support & Development Award for his work, also on the on the Civil Engineering in Primary School's project wit h St Mary's Primary Sc hool in Bellaghy.

On the 1st April 2009 t he Science & Engineering Ambassadors (SEAs ) programme became STEM Ambass adors. The change of name has been accompanied by a new vis ual identity. These changes are designed to reflect the true breadt h of skills and c areers that the programme repres ents across all of the science, technology, engineering and maths disciplines and how Ambassadors illuminat e young people and teachers about their work.
