Finding The Right Window

"All Windows Are Not Made Equal."

Because planetary orbits are elliptical rather than exactly circular, launch windows -- occuring near every conjunction -- can be less or more favourable in terms of the velocity required to send a spacecraft to a particular planet. We see above that in 2003 it is unusually easy to send a spacecraft to Mars (low velocity required) while the next window in 2005 requires a much bigger (and more expensive) rocket.
