Approaching the planetary mass the spacecraft accelerates according to the law:
 

The quantity Vºº2 (as above) is a measure of how much speed a spacecraft (a) needs to shed to go into orbit around a planet or (b) needs to pick up in order to escape its gravitational field. It is sometimes referred to as C3 or launch energy at the instance of departure.
