Warm, Wet October, Warmest Halloween on Record

Armagh Observatory reports that October 2014 was warmer than the average for the month, with an average temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius, approximately 0.6 C warmer than the most recent 30-year (1981тАУ2010) average October temperature at Armagh, which is 10.12 C. This month also recorded the highest maximum temperature on record at Armagh for Halloween, that is October 31st, when the mercury reached 17.9 degrees C. This was the warmest Halloween day at Armagh for at least 171 years, that is since records of maximum and minimum temperatures began at Armagh in August 1843.

The warmest day was the 18th, with a maximum temperature of 18.4 C. The coldest night was the 29th, with a minimum temperature of 0.4 C. There were no days with nighttime air frost, but 10 days with ground frost.

The month was also wetter than normal, with a total precipitation of 103.1 mm (4.1 inches), which is approximately 20 percent more rainfall than the most recent 30-year (1981тАУ2010) average for October at Armagh. The wettest day was the 5th, with a total precipitation of 22.9 mm (approximately 0.9 inches).

The number of hours of strong sunshine was 90.8, almost the same as the most recent 30-year (1981тАУ2010) average sunshine at Armagh. The sunniest day was the 4th with 9.2 hours of strong sunshine.

These data refer to observations at Armagh Observatory, which has been recording the weather at Armagh since 1795.
