Second Warmest July in Armagh

Armagh Observatory reports that July was much warmer and sunnier than usual.

The mean monthly temperature was 18.0 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit), that is, 3 degrees C higher than the 30-year (1950-1979) July average. This makes last month the equal second warmest July in Armagh since records began in 1796. Only July 1989 (18.2 degrees C) had a higher average. The mean temperature for July 1983 was also 18.0 degrees C. The highest temperature, 29.9 degrees C, was recorded on 18th July. The highest ever temperature recorded at Armagh was 30.3 degrees C on 10th July 1934. The highest minimum temperature last month was 18.1 degrees C recorded on 20th July.

The total sunshine for the month was 228.3 hours, that is, about 77% more than the average value of 129 hours. Last month was the sunniest July since 1989 (243.8 hrs).

Rainfall amounted to 57.9 mm, just slightly below the average of 68.1 mm. Over half of July's rain fell on the last four days of the month.

These data refer to observations at Armagh Observatory, which has been recording the weather at Armagh since 1795.
