Archives Awareness in Armagh

To participate in the UK and Ireland Archive Awareness Campaign, local libraries and museums are working together to show the public what a wealth of archive material is housed in Armagh. This year the campaign is entitled "Routes to Roots" to link with the 2004 Year of the Garden and with a major BBC Family History Series that will include subjects as varied as journeys, migration, scientific exploration, botany, land disputes and town planning.

The co-operating organisations include Armagh City Library, Armagh County Museum, the Armagh Observatory, Armagh Public Library, the Cardinal TomАs с Fiaich Memorial Library and Archive, the Cardinal Cahal Daly Library in the Armagh Campus of the Queen's University Belfast, the Irish and Local Studies Library and the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum. A spokesperson for these bodies said:

"We are keen to make use of this national campaign to let people know that when researching material, they may well find what they need from the maps, letters, diaries, journals, plans and local and national newspapers which are housed in our local museums, libraries and academic institutions. We very much welcome enquiries and, to make the best use of people's time, we suggest that appointments are made in advance of any visit to our archives."

The Archive Awareness Campaign will be running throughout the autumn and it is hoped to highlight these important resources in the coming months. A range of these archives will be available to view beginning Monday 6 September, and especially on Saturday 11 September when a number of these organisations will be open to the public as part of the European Heritage Open Days initiative. Please contact the individual venues to find out opening times and tours.
