ARMAGH OBSERVATORY ROBINSON SCHOOLS LECTURE
St. Mary's Christian Brothers' Grammar School
In October 1997, a spacecraft the size of a small house was launched from Cape Canaveral and sent on its way to Saturn. Due to arrive in July 2004 the Cassini / Huygens mission will spend at least four years in orbit around Saturn, studying its atmosphere, moons and rings. Along the way it will deliver the Huygens probe into the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn's largest moon and one with an atmosphere thought to be similar to that of the Earth before life began. The talk will highlight some of the enormous scientific and technical problems that have been overcome along the way, as well as the value of the "house" for improving our knowledge and understanding of the Saturn system.
