2008 Robinson Schools Lecture

poster
The Robinson Schools Lecture will be delivered in the Royal School Armagh, College Hill, Armagh, at 2.00 pm on Friday, 21st November 2008. The lecturer will be Professor Peter W.J.L. Brand FRSE, of the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.

Pupils should plan to arrive at the school by approximately 1.30 pm and proceedings should be finished by approximately 3.00 pm. Parking will be available in the School Grounds, or alternatively in the Planetarium Car Park just across the road.

Teachers and pupils who would like to attend should contact Mr Warren Fowles, The Royal School, College Hill Armagh. Tel.: 028-3752-2807; e-mail: sfowles830at signroyalschool.armagh.ni.sch.uk.

The title and abstract of Professor Peter W.J.L. Brand's lecture are:

BLACK HOLES AND THE UNIVERSE

"I shall describe the Universe and show why there are lots of Black Holes in it, and how we know. I shall explain why we should avoid them, and how, and what happens if we don't. The distorting effect that they (and other normal material bodies) have on space and time, curving light rays and changing time, means that we can use space itself to measure the Universe, with surprising results."

All schools attending are invited to produce a wiki on any aspect of astronomy. Book tokens to the value of 50, 30 and 20 pounds will be awarded respectively as First, Second and Third prizes for these wikis, subject to a sufficient standard of entry being reached. Judges will be members of the Armagh Observatory and Royal School Armagh staff. The web address of the wiki together with a username and password must be e-mailed to: sfowles830at signroyalschool.armagh.ni, to reach the School by 5.00 p.m. on Thursday 13th November at the latest.

For more information on the wiki competition, please contact Mr Warren Fowles at the Royal School Armagh, Tel.: 028 3752 2807; e-mail: sfowles830at signroyalschool.armagh.ni.

2008 Robinson Lecture

Schools may also wish to consider sending a party of senior pupils to the Observatory's biennial Robinson Lecture "God and the Universe", which is to be held at 8.00 pm, Thursday 20th November, in the Armagh City Hotel, Armagh.
