E-Science

CosmoGrid is an Irish project led by DIAS to develop and exploit e-science technology for research in cosmic physics. As part of this programme, Simon Jeffery leads a project to develop tools for the automated analysis of stellar spectra. During 2004, we have further developed our automated fitting software SFIT both to make it more robust and to facilitate processing very large numbers of spectra. Extensive documentation has been developed, including improved source code documentation which can be automatically extracted to linked hypertext documents with a utility AUTODOC developed by David Morgan.

To facilitate the computational work, a high-performance computer cluster has been installed at the Armagh Observatory. This comprises 15 dual-processor 3.0GHz work nodes, and one master node, with a total of 30GB memory, and provides the Armagh node of the CosmoGrid network. The Armagh cluster is known as the Beehive, or M44 for short, after the open star cluster in Praesepe.
