Subject: Congrats to Martin McKenna; Dob Bargain, PhD position, Free Journals


Hi all,

1. Belated congratulations to Martin McKenna of Maghera, who has just
been honoured by the naming of an asteroid, 1995LJ, as "42531 McKenna".
Martin is a renowned, enthusiastic and tireless observer, and was named
"Astronomer of the Year" for 1995 by IFAS, the Irish Federation of
Astronomical Societies. His main interest is comet-hunting, and he has
spent many many hours, at all times of the night, in his quest.    Well
done Martin, and good luck in your searching!

2. Thanks to Prof Alan Fitzsimmons of QUB, who told me of the following
bargain. Well known photo and astronomy retailer Warehouse Express is
offering a 6" (150mm) Bushnell Dobsonian for £99;. It's an F8, with a
6x30 finder, and 25mm eyepiece. Delivery in mainland UK is £3.99;
delivery to NI costs £19.95s. Delivery to ROI: contact them via the
website for details: www.warehouseexpress.com. Bushnell is a fairly
reputable make, but I dodn't know the quality of this particular 'scope.
Still, at that price, it would be good value for anyone starting off as

3. Funded Gamma-ray Astronomy Studentship at NUI Galway.

A Science Foundation Ireland funded Ph.D. studentship will be available
in the Gamma-ray Astronomy Research Group at NUI-Galway, commencing in
September 2006.  The project will involve the use of the VERITAS
ground-based gamma-ray telescope array to search for  Galactic sources
of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma radiation.  VERITAS is an international
collaboration of scientists from the US, Canada, the UK, and Irish
members from NUIG, UCD, GMIT and CIT.  We plan to investigate the nature
of "dark accelerators", objects which emit VHE radiation but are not
visible at other wavelengths.  Some travel to the observatory site in
Arizona is an important component of this project.  The initial stipend
will be EUR16k per annum, rising to EUR17k, and funds will be available
for fees and travel.  The position is funded for three years. 
Applicants should hold, or expect to graduate with a first or upper
second class honours degree in Physics or Astronomy.

Applicants should submit a CV with the names of two referees to Dr Mark
Lang (mark.langnuigalway.ie) or Dr Gary
Gillanders (gary.gillandersnuigalway.ie).
