UserGuide Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics *CF Services Guide: Xwin32* [CF navigation bar] [CF Home] [UserGuide Index] [UserGuide Help] X-Win32 - Version 7.1 with OpenGL Download / Install / Configuration ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Overview/Notes: 1. The following instructions cover the installation and usage of Xwin32, which is a remote X11 server for Win32 platforms, such as Windows 9x, NT, 2000, and XP. 2. If you have an existing version of Xwin32, these instructions generally apply for upgrading it as well, simply install the new copy over the top of the existing one. X-Win32 Installation: 1. Click this link to download the installer and save it to a convenient location. *NOTE that the link above is only accessible from CfA computers. Please email cfhelp if you are offsite and need to install this software. 2. After downloading, go to where you saved the file (in windows explorer) and double-click on the x-win612sf.exe file to start the installer. 3. Choose your setup language and click "OK". 4. Click "Next". 5. Click "Yes" to accept the License Agreement. 6. In the Key: text box type in (or copy and paste) 30960-9405-27029-59997 and click "Next". 7. A popup window appears: "The key you entered is a network license for network 131.142.*.*" click "OK". 8. Accept the default destination folder of: C:\Program Files\Starnet\X-Win32 7.1 and click "Next". 9. For Setup Type - make sure CUSTOM options is selected - click "Next". 10. You will see a bunch of options here, you won't need to select/deselect anything in this menu normally, so just click "next". 11. Program Folders: X-Win32 7.1 - click "Next". 12. The application installs - click Finish; Check "Run Xwin32 Now" box, click "Finish" and continue to steps below... Configuring Xwin32 Post-Install: 1. The wizard should appear, if not, right click on the X in the system tray (screenshot), and select Xconfig, then click the "wizard" button. 2. In the Connect Method list box, click to select "rsh" and click next. 3. A box labeled "Unix Host" appears here. Type in "test" or anything else you feel like. 4. Login - type in your username, or anything else you want. 5. Command - Select the default, "Linux." 6. Session Name - Type in "CFA" 7. Push "Next." This saves the session. Note: The above instructions may not make sense; but what we're trying to do is create a stub session so Xwin won't bother you every time it starts up to make a connection. (We're not using the builtin Xwin ssh client.) 8. Now you should be at a window with multiple tabs on the top. 9. Click the "Window" Tab: Here, you want to set "Backing Store" to be in the "Always On" state. (screenshot) 10. Click the "Display" Tab: Your detected IP address is selected, accept defaults, no changes needed. 11. Click the "Input" Tab:(screenshot) You can leave these as default; However, if you require 3 button mouse support on your xterms, you can force it "on" if need be. This allows you to simulate pressing the middle mouse button by pushing down the left and right mouse buttons simultaneously. 12. Click the "Font" Tab (screenshot). There should be 2 rows listed in the Font Path. These were setup during the installation. You may have more fonts installed from a previous version of X-Win32. That's fine. If you require additional fonts for your X sessions, you can get them from starnet at the Starnet Font Page . 13. Click the "Security" Tab (screenshot) , click the "Add" button. In the Add Xhost box that pops up, type in "127.0.0.1" and click OK. Check the "Access Control" box. 14. Click the "Other" Tab: - You can disable the xwin startup screen by unchecking the box if you find it to be annoying. Otherwise, accept the defaults, no changes are needed in this window. 15. Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the X-Win32 Configuration window and click OK. 16. X-Win32 is now fully configured. Starting and Testing X-Win32: 1. Create a shortcut to the desktop. Here's a quick way to do this on Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. With the left mouse button, click the Start button > scroll to Programs > move your mouse over to X-win32 6.1 > move your mouse over and on X-Win32 (the one with the blue X). Click and hold down with the right mouse button and drag your mouse to any blank area on the desktop. Release your right mouse button. A popup menu appears. With the left mouse button; click, Create Shortcut(s)Here. Using your left mouse button, you can click and hold down on the icon. (the shortcut) that appears and position it anywhere on the desktop, then release your mouse button (drag-and-drop). 2. Double click the blue "X-Win32" shortcut on the desktop. A small blue X is placed in the system tray. The system tray is located at the lower right corner of the taskbar. The taskbar is at the bottom of your desktop (the default location) where the Start button and possibly other small icons are located. (screenshot) The blue X should \ appear next to the clock. X-Win32 is now started and will be used by the SSH program to bring up an xterm window. (screenshot) 3. Open your SSH Terminal app (PuTTY, Teraterm, etc) and connect to the desired server to test; simply typing "xterm" at your unix shell prompt, should get an xterm window to appear on your desktop. (screenshot) Please keep in mind that whatever SSH client you decide to use, it must support X11 forwarding over the SSH connection. Most SSH clients appear to handle it fine, but often it must be enabled as a feature/switch in the client settings. The pages below each contain a brief description and a screenshot on how to perform this in the respective application. * Click Here - For information on how to configure PuTTY client for use with X-Win32. * Click Here - For information on how to configure Teraterm client for use with X-Win32. * Click Here - For information on how to configure SSH.com client for use with X-Win32. Closing X-Win32: To close X-Win32. Click with the right mouse button the blue X-Win32 icon placed in the system tray next to the clock. A popup menu appears. Scroll up with the mouse and click Close with the left mouse button. Tip: You can also access X-Config and other options from this popup menu. Caveats: * Don't select the "typical" installation option when installing Xwin- for some reason this is hopelessly broken and it doesn't install all the fonts correctly. * If you have followed the directions above and you still get an error about not being able to open the display (in your terminal app) check your .cshrc or other unix shell login files to make sure you haven't changed the display variable in one form or another. * The ssh.com SSH client has this nagging tendency to lose settings if you don't click on the "save" icon immediately after turning on tunneling; so if you are using this client with xwin and you get display errors, this is most likely the case. * In reference to the above, it is helpful to keep in mind that the settings changes that you make in whatever SSH client you use to connect, that the effects of said changes may not occur until you restart the ssh client and initiate a new connection. * Personal firewalls such as "zonealarm" etc, if not set up properly can stop your xwin setup from functioning. * In order to use the application "Mathematica" you will need to download fonts from the starnet font page listed above, otherwise you will get errors when you run this application. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CF Services Guide index ------------------------------------------------------------------------ / Last modified on Saturday, 01-Apr-2006 15:06:05 EST / / Comments or Questions?
