Finally (a bit later :-) I got my hands on a copy of official Merlin
beta CD. Here is my bug report.

0) Complete installation took about 200MB (not including swap file).
How did they managed to do it? Base OS takes alone about 100MB!

1) Anyone knows how to exit Works Wordprocessor WITHOUT saving the untitled
file? (Open IBM Works, select "New" Word Processor, type something, try to
exit).

2) Truetype font rendering looks poor. Some fonts are simply wrong
(like Courier New). I also noticed that some Type 1 fonts are screwed
as well: Ghostscript renders them incorrectly while OS/2 3.0 fonts
worked fine.

3) Software registration does not work over Internet. Hope it will in GA.

4) VTD/VTN is unstable: sometimes refuses to start, refuses to record.

5) MMPM does not have Mixer (!), so working with VT becomes troublesome.
How can I adjust mic recording settings?

6) VTN failed to recognize all my commands; phrases produced by VTD
left me ROFL, really! I attribute this to quality of my mic and very heavy
accent, so I can't really say anything useful here. Looks like VT isn't
for me.

7) Klondike Solitaire has improved a bit, hurrah! :-) New bug was introduced
into it, however (the score disappears during play). Choice of sounds is
extremely poor to my taste.

8) WebEx complains about "/smear" file not found when launched from URL
object.

9) Packet travel times in traceroute are now quantized at 1000 ms level -
very annoying.

10) LaunchPad (called "Toolbar") has "close" button in the corner which
is obviously out of place. It was probably appeared after checking/unchecking
of "Hide Frame Controls" in its Properties.

11) Root directory of install drive is filled with garbage. It should be
cleaner too (too many directories now).

12) Config.sys created by installation is still a complete mess. And you
thought win.ini contents was impossible to understand?? Look at OS/2 4.0
config.sys....

13) CD player is SLOOOOW to start and takes lots of memory. Why?

14) When I click on MIDI file it starts to play. No controls appear. How
to stop it? Same for WAV, AVI, FLC...

15) Install routines are very inconsistent between them - different look,
different controls, etc.

16) Installation CD is also a mess; I suspect they are having great time
coordinating pieces of software written by different people into one
installation. They should also get rid of diskette version: remember KISS
principle?

17) I can't call Java support "integrated". Well, I would like to get rid
of it at all anyway.

18) When I click on "Help" in "Voice Game" of VT, it crashes.

19) I remember installing something called "3D look" or whatever; anyone
knows where and what it is?

20) During intensive screen output in VIO window (eg, "dir /s") mouse
pointer movement is very jerky. I don't know whether it was in Warp or
not though. No, it doesn't flashes (my card has hardware cursor), just
jerky.

21) Ultimedia Mail is still bundled! Thanks God and David Nugent I have
Pine for OS/2...

22)
-------------
SET ULSPATH=D:\LANGUAGE
SET LOCPATH=D:\IBMI18N\LOCALE;D:\LANGUAGE\LOCALE
SET I18NDIR=D:\IBMI18N
SET NLSPATH=d:\tcpip\msg\%L\%N;D:\MPTN\MSG\NLS\%N;
-------------
So many internationalization keywords? Why? Again lack of common strategy?

23) Programmer's Toolkit supplied on CD has file H/OPENGL/AUX.H (?) -
clean way to troubles with copying. OS/2 handles it nicely, but not in
DOS session.

24) echo >\os2\system\swapper.dat still kills the system. Damn!
(note: it does not happen if you have HPFS386).

25) At least two DOS filemanagers (Volkov Commander and Disk Navigator)
produce Internal Processing Error when attempting to delete non-empty
directory from HPFS drive. This also happens at least in build 18.
RMDIR command works as expected.

26) Timezone variable is incorrect (I don't know where the bug is
but NFS messes timestamps. I have to SET TZ=GMT-3EDT instead of SET
TZ=GMT+3EDT).

Actually, I bored to list bugs in Merlin beta. But it's not bugs that worries
me - lack of any new functionality. VoiceType may sound innovative and
great, but I doubt it is _so_ great (especially with such high memory
requirements and long necessary enrollment). Merlin may divert more
people from OS/2 than attract.
