What is the full filename for these drivers?

1597_110.zip is available on Matrox's ftp site.
http://www.matrox.com/mgaweb/home.htm
ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga

1601_103.zip is available from OS2's European Device Repository.
http://www.europe.ibm.com/getdoc/psmemea/progserv/device/

I have found IBM's 1601_103 (v1.03) to be far more stable than the
1597_110 (v1.10) set of Matrox's.

Notes:
- running seamless windows under both 64K and 16M colour
modes can really (I mean REALLY) slow down all desktop
repaints, redraws, basically everything. OS/2 or DOS boxes
appear not to cause this problem.
* 24 bpp (16M colors)
- 24bpp DIVE support is out to lunch in both sets of these
drivers. (Noted in read-me file).
- Max mode is 1152x882.
- 'bleed through' from underlying windows can occur at times,
especially winapps under win-os2. It generally starts off
fairly localised and spreads, eventually involving the cursor
display. Can be seen as 'sparkles' of underlying borders
and frames. If it just involves win-os2, shutdown of same
and re-start generally cures it. Once it spreads to pm desktop,
through seamless windows, shutdown and re-boot required.
* 16bpp (64K colours)
- Max 16bpp support is 1600x1200 (depending on your monitor).
- Switching to from full screen win-os2 to pm desktop can at times
lock up with blank screen and a mostly dead system. 3 finger
salute required to get out.

Overall, the board appears to work very well. The drivers are not too
bad, but there is quite obviously still work to be done on them.

What really ticks me off is OS/2 apps which require the system to be
in 8bpp modes to run at all, error out when starting up under 64K or
16M colour modes , and then quit - aaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhh. There
are some relatively new applications that STILL do this.

Rick

The drivers in 1597_110.zip at the Matrox site are the latest public
release. If the readme.os2 file in the 1601_103.zip is dated November 2,
then they are not IBM drivers (i don't think ibm is making these drivers
anyway). They are a beta version of the Matrox drivers. The numbering
they are using is weird though. The 1.10 drivers are actually version
1.01, renamed 1.10 in the public release. Hence 1.03 is more recent.

The readme.os2 file says that DIVE is disabled by default in 24 bpp
modes due to a problem with the AVIO player. However you can turn it on
by using the mgaconf.cmd utility provided with the drivers.

I am using the 16 bpp mode at 1024x768 with the 1.03 drivers, and have
not noticed any problems with slow repainting in seamless winos2
sessions except with a windows program that requires a good amount of
memory. I am not a heavy windows user, so that might be the reason for
not seeing this problem more often. All the os/2 programs i use run well
at this resolution and color depth. The only program that seems to
constantly crash my system is the npswps WPS enhancer. I've also noticed
that some times, after having the computer on for a couple of days, the
WPS is not able to run PM based programs any more. When that happens, i
know that the WPS will soon crash, although programs running in detached
sessions continue running, even after the WPS has crashed. The other
thing that i've noticed is that the lines that load the Millenium
drivers in CONFIG.SYS should be placed at the end of CONFIG.SYS (or at
least at the end of the section that loads all other drivers and device
handlers) otherwise additional problems may arise. if they are moved to
the middle or the beginning of config.sys (at least in my system). Those
lines are:

DEVICE=E:\MGA\OS2\KMGAX64.SYS
SET MGA=E:\MGA\OS2
SET VIO_MGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA,BMGAX64)
SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_MGA
DEVICE=E:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS
DEVICE=E:\OS2\MDOS\VMGAX64.SYS
