Focus

Our lab research is concerned with the application of physical and mathematical methods to problems arising at the the interface between soft condensed matter, fluid and solid mechanics, and nanoscience. We combine theory, simulations and experiments, the goal being to iterate between the three until consistent physical pictures and theoretical models emerge. Current research topics are micro- and nanofluidics, membranes, microgels and microcapsules, active colloids. Our applications lie in the fields of materials science, electrochemical systems, wetting, adhesion and friction, drug delivery, and more.

History

The Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Modified Surfaces was created by the A.N.Frumkin IPCE RAS in 1989 after the Department of Surface Phenomena was closed with the retirement of Professor Boris V. Derjaguin. The new Laboratory was composed from the parts of Laboratories of Surface Forces (formerly directed by Professor Boris V. Derjaguin) and Thin Liquid Films (previously directed by Professor Nikolai V. Churaev). Professor B.V.Derjaguin moved to the Laboratory with his research group as an Emeritus Professor. Dr Yakov I. Rabinovich was appointed as a founding director in 1989. In 1993 Professor Olga I. Vinogradova took over the leadership of the Laboratory. In 2009 the Laboratory of Micro- and Nanofluidics was organized by Professor Olga I. Vinogradova at the Physics Department of the M.V.Lomonosov MSU. Since that the two Laboratories conduct joint complimentary research.
